You want a particularly natural cloth nappy system, free from synthetic materials? Here we show you all the possibilities :)

As with all other nappy systems, three tasks should be fulfilled:

Catching the big business

Soaking up the small business

Do not allow moisture to pass through to the outside

For big business

Nappy fleece is placed in the nappy as the top layer to catch the big business and dispose of it separately.
Nappy liner (paper fleece) is usually made of purely vegetable, fully biodegradable materials and is usually available on rolls. The fleece is disposed of together with the stool in the rubbish bin. If there is only pee, it can be washed in the washing machine and reused 3-4 times (depending on the brand).
Stay dry liners and fleecy liners are made of polyester. This is the washable and reusable alternative to paper fleece. After use, the stool is disposed of in the toilet and the fleece is washed in the washing machine.
If you prefer to avoid synthetic fabrics as much as possible, paper fleece/nappy liner is ideal for you. It can still be useful to have some fleecy liners or stay dry liners on hand. They are especially useful at night (longer wrapping intervals) to keep the baby's skin drier.

For the small business

It's easy to find inserts / absorbent pads made from all-natural materials. This is because most popular absorbent pads are made from plant fibres such as cotton, hemp or bamboo viscose.

Cotton: absorbs moisture quickly, stores moderately, normal drying time.
Bamboo viscose: absorbs moisture quickly, stores well, longer drying time.
Hemp: absorbs moisture slowly, stores extremely well, longer drying time.

For small business, you need a basic cotton pads and booster (optional for extra absorbency). These are ideal for daytime use and last several hours.

Basic inserts made of cotton

* Prefolds are flat absorbent pads made of several layers of cotton sewn together. They are divided into three chambers that can be folded into a handy pad in two easy steps. Prefolds are inexpensive, very easy to wash and dry quickly.

* There are also prefolds made of bamboo or hemp, which can of course also be used as an insert. They are more expensive to buy but much more absorbent, so you usually don't need an additional booster.

* Alternatively, you can also use gauze nappies/muslins as a basic pad. They are very cheap, easy to wash, dry very quickly and are flexible to fold. As the child gets older and makes more wee, they usually need a booster.

* To increase the absorbency you can use boosters.

* Boosters made of bamboo or hemp have a slower absorption speed and should therefore be placed under the base insert.

You can also wrap the base insert around the booster to form a thick pad so everything is right at hand, easier to transport and nothing slips.

Tips: For very small babies you can use knitted nappies (bind diapers) made of 100% cotton eg: Knitted nappy from Disana .

The nappy is made of stretchy knitted fabric from natural organic cotton and does not require Velcro or snaps. It is pleasantly soft and adjusts beautifully to your baby. It is great for newborns because you can adjust the nappy's length. Thus, it grows with your child.

To increase the absorbency, the nappy should be equipped with an additional absorbent pad, for example Muslin or bamboo booster.

For the night: Enjoy your sleep and don't have to wake up by unnecessary wrapping in the night. To increase the absorbency even further, you could theoretically add many absorbent pads or more boosters. But that would be impractical and would make a very thick nappy package. In addition, the absorbency is then exclusively in the middle. We therefore recommend using fitted nappies.

Fitted nappies have the shape of a complete nappy and are wrapped around the child. They are made entirely of absorbent material and thus absorb liquid even when the child is lying on its side. Their absorbency is enormous and a fitted nappy can last all night. However, fitted nappies do not have a waterproof outer layer and therefore require a waterproof cover/overpant. Pull up covers are especially popular at night, because they do not have rubbers on the cuffs, which can leave marks.

Wetness protection

If you're wondering how wetness protection can work without synthetic materials, the solution is simple: greased wool!

Wrapping with wool has many advantages and is a great alternative for all parents who want an all-natural option for their children. Wool is especially breathable, hardly ever stains, and naturally regulates temperature. Most wool covers for cloth nappies are made from 100% virgin wool. Natural wool is characterized by its special fineness, strong crimp and soft touch. It is comfortable on the skin and yet robust against environmental influences. Wool absorbs 30% of its own weight before it feels wet. So when the absorbent pad is full, the excess liquid is still absorbed by the wool for a bit longer.

Virgin wool contains lanolin (wool wax), a special substance that makes the wool water repellent. However, this lanolin wears out over time and must be renewed regularly. In order to make the wool overpants waterproof and to keep them waterproof, it is necessary to grease them occasionally with e.g. Avo&Cado wool wax.

There are three situations in which the wool must be re-greased: after washing, after a long period of use or sometimes when the nappy has become particularly wet.

You can find our detailed instructions for wool care here.

Wool overpants can look either like a normal cover made of PUL or like a pull up cover.

Overpants made of wool - ideal for wrapping during the day.

Covers made of wool work in the same way as covers made of PUL. You use them with your preferred inserts and change them if necessary. If some stool has gotten on the covers, it's usually enough to rinse it off under the faucet. Because another surprising benefit of wool is: it doesn't need to be washed that often! Wool is naturally antibacterial and stain-resistant. The hollow fiber transports odors away from the child and hardly absorbs them in the first place. Therefore, after use, you only need to let it air briefly and then you can reuse it again.

Thanks to the lanolin and the special structure of the wool fiber, wool has a certain self-cleaning effect against wetness and odors. Nevertheless, the covers must be greased after each wash cycle, as the lanolin washes out to a large extent during the washing process. We therefore recommend washing and greasing wool covers every 2-6 weeks (depending on contamination).

Some covers made of wool grow with your child, as they have three or four rows of snaps on the front of the nappies. These clever snaps allow the nappies to be adjusted in waist height, so you can fit them perfectly to your child.

Other virgin wool overpants are available in a variety of sizes.

Pull up coverpants made of wool - ideal for night diapering

As mentioned earlier, we recommend fitted nappies for nighttime absorbency. The fitted nappies must be combined with an overpant. Here we recommend pull up coverpants made of wool for wetness protection. The cuffs are very soft and do not leave marks on your baby's delicate skin. Since the wool pull up coverpants do not need to be closed with Velcro or snaps, they are easy to put on and take off and your baby can move freely! Together, the fitted nappies and pull up coverpants create an extremely dense and absorbent system that lasts up to 12 hours - ideal for nighttime. So your child can sleep more peacefully, and that means more sleep for you too :)

Preserving and washing

You will find our general washing instructions here!

Covers and pull up overpants made of wool must be treated with wool grease to become and remain waterproof. We recommend to use pure lanolin (adeps lanae anhydricus). Here you can find our instructions for greasing wool overpants.
